I think it's easy to see what operating system is easiest. Steps that are italicized are optional.

Linux Mandrake

  1. Boot off the cd
  2. Follow the instructions
  3. Don't enable hard drive optimizations
  4. Install LILO to the boot partition (/dev/hda1 for me)
  5. dd if=/dev/hda1 of=/mnt/DOS_hda2/bootsect.lnx
  6. Use rpm -e to get rid of all that Perl trash
  7. Use setup to turn off all those unnecessary services that are running by default
  8. Add C:\BOOTSECT.LNX to boot.ini, to boot Linux from NT's boot manager.

Windows 2000

  1. Install Windows 98
  2. Boot Windows 98
  3. Run setup from the CD
  4. When the computer won't boot, disable IRQ Routing
  5. When network doesn't work, use Linux to get the realtek drivers from the www.realtek.com.tw website.
  6. Install the realtek drivers
  7. Use the control panel to turn off all those unnecessary services that are running by default
  8. Get the critical updates from Windows Update

Windows 98

  1. Boot off the cd
  2. Follow the instructions
  3. When hardware doesn't work, use Linux to get the VIA drivers from the VIA website.
  4. While you're there, get updated realtek drivers
  5. Boot 98
  6. Install the VIA drivers
  7. Reboot
  8. Install the updated realtek drivers
  9. Now you can get video drivers
  10. Install the video drivers
  11. Reboot
  12. Get the critical updates from Windows Update
  13. Reboot
  14. Get everything else from Windows Update
  15. Reboot
  16. Try to get sound working, it doesn't work with the es1370
  17. Shut down the system
  18. Oh yes it does, Windows 98 just didn't like the card in that PCI slot, even though it worked fine in ALL the other operating systems.
